Enjoying spending quality time with the family!

For once, my time with my family is going to become severely limited! It's kind of scary, considering I have been married for over 6 years. I am not use to having immediate access to my wife and I am sure the same will be for her. Furthermore, it will be more difficult for both of us as I will be living in Glendale, Arizona and she will remain back with my brother and sister in Tucson, Arizona.

I rely on her for just about everything, it's kind of sad. I guess I will have to wash my own dang clothes for a change. :( It's all good, we have honestly been preparing for this for a while, I am sure we will be fine! The true test will come in the first quarter to see how much time we truely will have for one another! Here comes med school!

Last day of orientation!

Well, the orientation days have ended. (Gasp!) However, I think most of us were pretty giddy as our final day of orientation neared the end.

We got a small taste of some of the coursework / slides we will be getting and my anxiety levels has begun to rise. A LOOOONGG winded discussion on financial aid was on the final day agenda and I like how we get hours and hours of discussion on financial aid and about 20 minutes on residency. :P HAHAH! Well.. I guess for now the most important thing in school is to get funding to go to school, then we will worry about residency! EEK!

Well... the days of endless hours of studying will begin soon, and I will try to blog the best I can to let you all know my HARDSHIPS! :)

2nd day of orientation! One day left!

It's a bit odd how many times / people have talked to us about balancing life and studies. Apparently a ton of medical students are overwhelmed and on the verge of a break down!

So I better make time for studying and myself/family so that I can be successful in school! I guess that will be a long process of tweaking different habits to finally find the right balance in life for me to succeed in medical school and succeed in my personal life.

After a few speeches from different faculty and staff we went to the Phoenix Art Museum. It was to look at different works of art from different artists and exam them visually and take notes on different visual observations. This was then tied into being a physician and learning to observe and take in many different things upon entering the room with a patient. It was a interesting way of presenting this concept. I thought it was an excellent excercise and it really got you thinking. It was interesting to see how different people see different things in different paintings by different artists.

Then I went out with a good friend of mine and fellow classmate, Greg MS I, to find and purchase a desk for my apartment. We got that and a new chair, and a few hours later, the desk is setup! The remainder of my apartment will be left to the stellar designing skills of my wife! She is awesome at doing stuff like that... and I am not! :)

I just hope to get a nice TV, haha, if not, I like the desk / study room, so I should be golden. Last day of orientation is tomorrow. We get off early and I plan on going to Yuma to see my family and my doggies this weekend for the 3 day weekend. I think my wife will be coming back with me on Sunday and staying a night to help me setup my place, but we will see. I am glad to be going home and spending some quality time with the family! She has a few days off too!! :) I miss my doggies as well. :(

Then, classes will begin on Tuesday and then the hardship begins! AHHHHH! I will keep you posted.

First day of orientation! Finally.. MS I

I was lucky enough to have a good friend of mine to attend my first day of med school orientation with (yes.. you Greg Alaestante)! I honestly had a great time, it was a very long day (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), but the experience was actually very exciting. Us AZCOM students were very proud to be thereand finally starting the journey into medicine. I got great vibes from all the speakers today, I think that the MWU faculty is a very caring one, and they seem to make every attempt to make all of the different students to associate and befriend one another.

I thought I would come after a long day and be lonely all alone in my apartment, but that hasn't happened yet. I have been pretty busy running around gathering the small items for my apartment. I came home today a couple of hours ago really tired! I had to setup the wireless router, new printer, and some groceries. Unfortunately some of the items in my got damn refrigerator was frozen due to my refrigerator being set to the coldest setting (no diet coke tonight).

I thought today was a productive day and I look forward to tomorrow. We will be going to the Phoenix Art Museum tomorrow, so that should be interesting! I will keep you guys posted!

Lastly, the picture posted below shows many seats open in the auditorium.. rest assured, everyone of those damn seats filled up by the start time.. sigh, it took some time to get through white coat fitting and pictures for our IDs! AAAH!! But we made it!

Finally.. I can sign this..

RIP: Baleen Zavalza :(

I just got a call from my little brother in law that his dog got ran over by a vehicle tonight. I have two dogs and would be absolutely devastated if my dogs were killed. That dog loved him so much and he had just as much love for him. It's kind of crazy, I never really understood the love between dog and owner until I got my first doggie (Tiny). It's like having a child (if you don't have one, which neither my brother in law or I do) of your own. He is going to look for a new dog to help start the healing process tomorrow and we will forever remember Baleen. :_(

Man dies after waiting 22 hours at hospital -MSNBC

Well apparently an article in MSNBC dated August 19, 2008 states a 50 year old patient died after choking on his medication. The punchline? He had been sitting there for 22 hours. :/ I suppose the surveillance showed staff a few feet away never attending to the patient and playing cards. What a wonderful health care system we have in place.

Luckily, their federally funding is at risk... and I quote:

"Federal officials have threatened to cut off funding because of Sabock’s death and a report that a physician punched a patient after the teen bit the doctor."

Now for the punching the physician did, yikes! There are meds to put your patients very near a coma but you don't have to go and punch the patient. Sheesh, well.. future physicians... take notes on the mistakes on the some of the worst health care providers in the country... so we WILL NOT be like them when we start serving humanity.

The history of the white coat?!?

I find it funny how everyone and their mother have to wear white coats at hospitals now. Growing up I was under the impression that this was reserved for the Physicians. Here is a quote from an article from the AMA regarding the white coat:

"The white coat has served as the pre-eminent symbol of physicians for over 100 years. A child’s earliest memory of a doctor is the person in the white coat. Patients expect to be treated in doctors’ offices, hospitals and clinics by an individual wearing white. At virtually every medical school, the first symbolic act is the "White Coat Ceremony" originated by Arnold P. Gold, MD. This is the ceremonial "cloaking" of a doctor-to-be as she or he embarks on a medical career."

"The White Coat Ceremony, as envisioned by Dr. Gold, welcomes those embarking on their medical careers to the community of physicians by giving them this powerful symbol of compassion and honor. It also gives them a standard against which they must measure their every act of care to the patients who trust them."

--------------------

I was reading up on the student doctor forums and I came across a rather hillarious story, and I quote:

"One day I was standing at the nurse's station in the Emergency Department drinking my Diet Cherry Coke during a rare quiet moment when I saw a guy in a Long White Coat and scrubs walking down the hall. I knew he wasn't a doctor by his demeanor and bearing but I idly surmised that maybe he was a respiratory tech or a Nurse Practitioner...you know, someone like that.

He stopped at his janitorial cart, put on his iPod, grabbed a toilet brush and proceded to give the crapper in a hall bathroom the most righteous cleaning I have ever seen. He was an artist. A true craftsman and that ****ing bathroom was absolutely spotless." -Panda Bear (www.studentdoctor.net)

Another great quote...

"If physicians started wearing wizard hats in the hospital, we would soon see dieticians, NPs/PAs, nurses, and pharmacists doing the same." -Unknown

I got a good laugh at both of them, so I share them for all to view! :)

AMSA - American Medical Student Association

Today I decided to join the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). Paid my fees and now a part of that.. why you ask? I am not sure. lol. But I figured that should be the first organization I join as a medical student. 4 years of dues paid! :)
